The Martins Amaewhule-led Rivers State House of Assembly has condemned Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s recent statement, where he described the lawmakers as “non-existent.” During Wednesday’s plenary session, the Majority Leader of the Assembly, Major Jack, raised the issue, labeling the Governor’s statement as “unguarded” and a direct insult to Nigeria.
In response to Governor Fubara’s statement, the pro-Wike lawmakers merged several local government laws to form a new Local Government Law.
This new law encompasses the Rivers State Local Government Law No. 5 of 2018, the Rivers State Local Government (Amendment) Law of 2023, and the Rivers State Local Government (Amendment) Law No. 4 of 2024.
The consolidated law addresses the establishment, structure, composition, finance, and functions of the local government councils and other related matters in the state.
Amaewhule, in a statement to newsmen, explained that the purpose of the bill is to consolidate all local government laws in the state into a single comprehensive law.
