The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Labour Party (LP) has released the schedule for its upcoming congresses at the ward, local government, and state levels.
In a statement by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiorah Ifoh, the NEC disclosed that ward congresses will hold from February to March 2025, local government congresses from April to May 2025, and state congresses from June to July 2025.
The NEC also directed states that have met the necessary registration requirements to notify the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) within the stipulated timeframe.

Key Committees Established
The NEC approved the formation of several committees, including the Electoral Reform Committee, Political Education Committee, and State Elders Council, to strengthen the party’s structure and operational framework.
Electoral Reform Committee
Speaking on the establishment of the Electoral Reform Committee, Labour Party National Chairman, Barrister Julius Abure, emphasized the party’s commitment to pursuing electoral reforms in Nigeria.
“We note that the Labour Party was a major victim in the 2023 general election and will therefore pursue electoral reform in Nigeria,” Abure said.
He stressed the importance of transparency in candidate selection processes, stating:
“For us to have credible, proactive leaders that will work in the interest of the people, the processes leading to the selection of these candidates must be credible, fair, and transparent.”
The committee will be chaired by Hon. Benedict Etanabene, with Hon. Okey Joe as co-chair and Dudu Manuga as Secretary. The committee has been given eight weeks to submit its report.
Political Education Committee
Highlighting the objectives of the Political Education Committee, Abure said:
“Before and during the 2023 general election, we understood that leadership alone was the major challenge of this country.
There is therefore the need to reorient the people and for them to change their attitudes and behaviors to catalyze growth and development.”
The committee will be chaired by Rt. Hon. Ativie Elizabeth, former Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, with Mr. Bulus Maisamari serving as Secretary. Other members will be announced in due course.
The Labour Party leadership reaffirmed its commitment to fostering internal democracy and positioning the party as a vehicle for credible governance in Nigeria.
