A governorship aspirant on the platform of the Labour Party (LP) in Anambra State, Mr. John Nwosu, has declared that the candidacy of Dr. George Moghalu has been nullified following the Supreme Court’s sack of the Julius Abure-led executive of the party.
The Supreme Court had, on April 4, 2025, removed the Abure-led leadership.
Despite the ruling, the same faction conducted a primary election on April 5, which produced the former Director-General of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Dr. George Moghalu, as the party’s candidate for the November 8 governorship election.

However, another faction of the LP, led by Senator Esther Usman Nenadi, conducted a separate primary on April 10, which saw Jude Umennajiego, a member of the Anambra State House of Assembly, emerge as the party’s flagbearer.
Mr. Nwosu, who opted out of the Abure-led primary but contested and lost in the Nenadi-led exercise, told journalists in Anambra on Tuesday that Moghalu’s emergence was illegitimate.
He argued that since Umennajiego was widely regarded as a placeholder, he remains the rightful candidate to fly the LP flag.
“The Supreme Court ruling of April 4, 2025, was definitive. We know who the leaders of LP are. It’s now up to INEC to do the needful for the process to continue,” Nwosu said.
He described the April 5 primary as “null and void,” insisting that the April 10 exercise should stand.
“The issue of a placeholder is extraneous to the established process. I am a firm believer in due process and rule of law. So I remain in the race for the candidacy,” he said.
Nwosu revealed that he has lodged an appeal within the party, and expects a formal pronouncement after the Easter holidays.
When asked if he would resort to legal action should the party deny him the ticket, Nwosu said, “The electoral processes are clear and full of established precedents. Something has to give. I’m a team player.
I hope it does not come to that. But if push comes to shove, I am ready to exhaust all remedies.”
