The Imo State chapter of the Labour Party (LP) has inaugurated its Local Government Area (LGA) coordinators of the Directorate of Mobilisation and Integration (DMI) across the 27 local council areas of the state to drive grassroots sensitisation and membership registration.
Speaking after the inauguration ceremony held at the party’s secretariat in Owerri, the State Chairman of the party, Callistus Ihejiagwa, said the initiative was part of efforts to strengthen the party’s presence in all LGAs ahead of the next general elections.
Ihejiagwa explained that the DMI, an organ of the party, is saddled with the responsibility of fostering unity and integrating non-members, especially supporters who joined the party during the 2023 elections, into its formal structure.

He recalled that when the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, joined the LP, he attracted numerous followers who were yet to be formally registered. According to him, the party is now making efforts to absorb these supporters fully to prevent internal conflict.
Charging the newly inaugurated coordinators, Ihejiagwa described them as the party’s “foot soldiers” at the grassroots level, urging them to strictly adhere to the party’s constitution and to prioritise the collective interest of the party over individual ambitions.
“You are not to work for individuals or aspirants. Make the affairs of the party your overall interest,” he cautioned.
On the issue of party leadership, Ihejiagwa reaffirmed that the Labour Party remains united at both the state and national levels under the leadership of Julius Abure, whom he described as the duly elected National Chairman, following the party’s convention in Nnewi, Anambra State.
He criticised those agitating for Abure’s removal, accusing them of inconsistency and double standards for attempting to oust a leader they participated in electing, without recourse to the party’s constitution.
Earlier, the DMI State Coordinator, Lady Kay Iwunze, explained that the formation of the structure was in compliance with directives from the party’s national leadership. She noted that the State Executive Committees of the DMI were inaugurated nationwide on December 6, 2024, which necessitated the extension of the structure to all 774 LGAs across the country.
Iwunze disclosed that the DMI was formerly known as the Obidient Harmonisation Committee (OHC), but was renamed to bridge the gap between the Labour Party, the Obidient Movement, and other interest groups.
“Our mission is to mobilise and integrate both new and old members into the Labour Party through grassroots sensitisation, with the core values of integrity and transparency. The change we seek starts with us,” she stated.
The DMI State Coordinator, alongside the newly inaugurated LGA coordinators, pledged loyalty to the party’s ideals and commended the state leadership for the opportunity to serve.
The highlight of the event was the official inauguration of the DMI coordinators by the State Chairman in the presence of party officials and supporters.
