Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has suggested that Rivers and Bayelsa States may soon defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC), as the party intensifies efforts to consolidate its grip on the South-South region ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Akpabio made the remarks on Saturday during a grand reception held in honour of Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State, who was officially welcomed into the APC.
Addressing party faithful at the event in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, Akpabio expressed optimism that more states in the region would soon align with the ruling party.

According to him, “Governor Sheriff of Delta State, thank you for joining the progressive family and moving the South-South in a progressive direction. Governor Umo Eno, after you, Rivers State will just tumble, after Rivers State, Bayelsa will join.”
He also lauded the APC’s victory in Edo State, noting, “We won the election with Governor Otu in Edo State and we produced an amiable Monday Okpebholo. Congratulations once again for your victory.”
Governor Umo Eno, who had hinted at leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in April due to internal crises within the party, formally defected to the APC on June 6 at a ceremony witnessed by members of the Progressive Governors Forum and top APC chieftains.
