The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has formally launched its Borno State chapter, promising to provide strong and credible opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections.
The unveiling ceremony took place on Thursday in Maiduguri, the state capital, with the convener of the movement in Borno, Sheriff Banki, accusing the APC of stifling dissent and silencing opposition voices across the state.
“Borno is in dire need of opposition parties. As far as we are concerned, there is no opposition in the state,” Banki said. “But starting from today, with the unveiling of this ADC, there will be strong opposition that can hold the government accountable and ensure proper checks and balances.”

He explained that the ADC’s presence in Borno was part of a wider national coalition aimed at countering APC dominance, describing the coalition as a platform for credible alternative leadership.
According to him, the movement would rally behind whoever emerges as the ADC’s presidential candidate in 2027, stressing the need for unity and determination to break political monopolies.
“We can win. What has always held us back is manipulation both from within and outside the opposition. With commitment and courage, we can challenge the system and succeed,” Banki asserted.
He also announced that the party had attracted several high-profile defectors in the state, including former governorship aspirants under the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), ex-treasurers and secretaries of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), former House of Assembly members, and other politicalstakeholders.
