Senator Abba Moro, representing Benue South and serving as the Senate Minority Leader, has dismissed speculations of division within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), insisting that the party remains united despite recent leadership crises.
The PDP, Nigeria’s main opposition party, has been grappling with internal wrangling stemming from competing interests and power struggles, fuelling concerns about its preparedness ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on Prime Time, an Arise Television programme, on Wednesday, Moro clarified that the current situation does not amount to a division. He explained that a party can only be considered divided if two parallel leadership structures exist, which is not the case with the PDP.

“There is no division in PDP. The problem in PDP is not a division in PDP. A division in a party that could lead someone to leave the party and join another, in line with the constitution, is where the leadership of the party is split and there are two parallel leaderships,” Moro said.
He recalled the era of the “new PDP” as a true example of division, stressing that today’s disagreements within the PDP are merely internal conflicts.
“But because of the semblance of crisis and disagreement among members of the party does not constitute division. That’s why I keep insisting that PDP is not divided,” he added.
The senator further described the situation as “contending tendencies” within the party rather than a structural split, maintaining that the PDP remains intact and capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in future elections.
“There is no division in PDP; there are contending tendencies within the party. That’s not division,” he reiterated.
