A chieftain of the New Nigerian Peoples Party, NNPP, Buba Galadima, has described the recently conducted by-elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, as illegal.
Galadima, who spoke on Monday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, accused INEC of violating constitutional provisions guiding the conduct of by-elections.
According to him, the Constitution mandates the electoral body to conduct a by-election within three months of a vacancy, a rule he claimed was not followed in several cases.

“The by-elections have come and gone, but they are being trailed by many issues. In fact, all of them were conducted illegally by INEC,” Galadima said.
He argued that some of the vacancies where INEC conducted by-elections had exceeded the three-month period stipulated by law. Citing Kano as an example, Galadima noted that one of the elections in the state was declared inconclusive in 2023 but was only revisited years later.
“Some of the by-elections are being held two years after.
For example, the one in Kano was an election declared inconclusive by the APC in 2023. The Constitution is clear—INEC must conduct by-elections within three months. If challenged in court, such elections could be nullified,” he added.
The NNPP chieftain urged Nigerians to take up legal action against the electoral commission to ensure compliance with constitutional provisions.
