The governorship candidate of the Action Alliance (AA) in Anambra State, Jeff Nweke, has cautioned against vote-buying in the forthcoming November 8 governorship election, describing the practice as a serious threat to Nigeria’s democratic development.
Nweke, in a statement released on Thursday in Awka, condemned the trend, particularly in light of the August 16 Anambra by-election, which he alleged was marred by widespread vote-buying.
He urged Nigerians of good conscience to unite in rejecting the act, warning that failing to address the menace could endanger the future of the country’s democracy.

“The commercialisation of votes is the root cause of corruption that has eaten deep into the fabric of society, and is breeding other forms of evil bedevilling the nation,” Nweke said.
The AA candidate lamented what he described as the decay of political values in the state.
“It is unfortunate and shameful in Anambra today, that what we are witnessing is an acute decay of decency in our politics.
It is a degeneration of sensible political strategy, and we have become self-centred, narrow-minded and morally deficient in the pursuit of our political goals,” he added.
Nweke reiterated that his campaign would remain focused on critical issues, including security, the provision of social amenities, citizens’ welfare, and accountability in governance.
