The national leadership of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has dissolved the State Working Committee (SWC) of its Imo State Chapter and inaugurated a 17-member Caretaker Committee to steer the party’s affairs for the next 90 days.
The decision was communicated through a letter signed by the party’s National Secretary, Dr. Olu Agunloye, who cited internal disputes and reports on the activities of the state chapter as reasons for the leadership overhaul.
“The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Social Democratic Party has considered reports on the activities within the Imo State Chapter and has, accordingly, dissolved the State Working Committee in line with the 2022 Constitution of the Party, as amended, and constituted a Caretaker Committee,” the letter stated.
The NWC approved the appointment of Engineer Augustine Okere as Acting State Chairman, while Comrade Onyekachi Asonye was named Acting State Secretary.

The new committee has been mandated to reorganise the chapter and restore credibility ahead of future elections.
According to the directive, the committee’s terms of reference include:
- Reorganising party operations and activities in line with NWC guidelines.
- Recruiting fresh members, particularly youths and women across the state.
- Ensuring regular meetings and events to strengthen the party’s presence.
- Providing monthly activity reports to the National Vice Chairman (South-East) and the National Chairman.
Other members of the caretaker committee include Chief Raymond Egenti (Deputy Chairman), Comrade Chijioke Onuoha (Vice Chairman 1), Chief Innocent Ekejiu (Vice Chairman 2), and Tony Duru (Vice Chairman 3).
Also appointed are Don Ubah (Publicity Secretary), Shanahan Nnadi (Legal Adviser), Princess Ifeoma Bassey (Organising Secretary), Obinna Oguneme (Youth Leader), and Amaka Osunde (Woman Leader), among others.
Dr. Agunloye emphasised that the committee’s tenure shall last 90 days from the date of the letter or as may be further directed by the NWC.
He urged the appointees to familiarise themselves with the constitution and policies of the party, noting that their appointments take immediate effect.
The letter was copied to key institutions, including the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Imo State Commissioner of Police, the State Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), the State Independent Electoral Commission, and other relevant bodies.
