Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to the All Progressives Congress, APC, in what marks a significant political shift in the South-South state.
Vice President Kashim Shettima on Wednesday led a powerful APC delegation to Yenagoa for Diri’s reception.
Also in attendance were Senate President Godswill Akpabio; Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun; Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa; Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori; Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma; and Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno.

The venue was filled with cheering supporters waving party flags and chanting as Diri was welcomed into the ruling party.
The defection is seen as a major blow to the PDP, considering Bayelsa has been one of its strongholds since the return of democracy in 1999. It also follows a string of defections linked to internal crises rocking the opposition party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Announcing his resignation at the Executive Council Chamber of the Government House, Diri said his move followed wide consultations.
“After extensive consultations, today, 15 October 2025, I wish to notify you that, in keeping with extant protocols, I, Governor Douye Diri, do hereby resign my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party,” he declared.
Diri’s defection was immediately endorsed by 23 members of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly led by Speaker Abraham Ngobere. Ten lawmakers were present during the announcement. The Assembly currently comprises 20 PDP members, three APC members and one from the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA.
Thousands of supporters thronged the streets of Yenagoa, dressed in white shirts and colourful regalia, drumming and singing in celebration of the governor’s move.
Meanwhile, the PDP continues to battle internal leadership crises as the 2027 elections approach.
