Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, has suspended his scheduled defection to the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the wake of the abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi State.
In a statement issued on Tuesday in Jalingo, Kefas described the incident as “heartbreaking,” saying it would be insensitive to proceed with political celebrations while families and the nation grapple with the tragedy.
“My decision follows the deeply saddening kidnapping of schoolgirls in Kebbi State. I believe the safety and well-being of the children are far more important than any political activity,” the governor said.

He extended his sympathy to the families of the abducted girls and expressed condolences to the Federal Government, urging security agencies to intensify efforts to secure the victims’ release.
The defection rally, earlier fixed for November 19, 2025, has now been put on hold pending further consultations and an improvement in the security situation.
Meanwhile, political realignments in Taraba have continued to gain momentum ahead of the governor’s planned switch to the APC. In the last 48 hours, all PDP members in the State House of Assembly, local government chairmen, cabinet members and top government officials — including the Secretary to the State Government — have defected to the ruling party.
Some party chieftains who spoke to our correspondent applauded the governor’s decision to suspend the event, describing it as a gesture of solidarity with the abducted Kebbi schoolgirls and their families.
