The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has urged Nigerians and the Independent National Electoral Commission to disregard the planned congresses announced by the Kwankwasiya Movement, led by former presidential candidate, Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso, describing the move as unconstitutional.
In a statement released on Monday in Abuja, the National Secretary of the party, Mr Ogini Olaposi, said the court-ordered congresses recognising the authentic leadership of the NNPP had already been held and concluded.
The party maintained that the Kwankwaso-led faction lacks constitutional backing to organise any congress on behalf of the party, stressing that the last recognised internal elections were conducted under judicial directive.

InfoStride News recalls that the Kwankwasiya group, in a formal letter to INEC, notified the electoral body of plans to conduct fresh NNPP congresses and a convention from November 25, 2025, to January 2026.
The NNPP, however, said the group cannot organise congresses in its name, explaining that the Memorandum of Association entered into with the Kwankwasiya Movement ahead of the 2023 presidential election cycle had expired.
According to the communiqué, the political understanding with Kwankwaso’s group had a limited tenure and “no longer confers any legal or constitutional rights.”
The party further stated that Kwankwaso and several members of his movement remain expelled from the NNPP for alleged anti-party activities, adding that disciplinary measures taken after internal deliberations still stand.
“We are still amazed that a man of Kwankwaso’s standing will insist on hijacking a party that gave it a soft landing to contest the 2023 presidential election for free,” Olaposi said in the statement.
The NNPP also challenged INEC to uphold its statutory responsibilities, insisting that the commission must obey court rulings and reflect the authentic leadership on its official website.
The party stressed that INEC should “upload only the judicially recognised leadership” and resist all forms of interference that could undermine the legitimacy of Nigeria’s political party administration framework.
The statement concluded by reiterating that the NNPP remains committed to constitutional order, internal discipline, and the enforcement of subsisting court directives, urging the public to verify party leadership only through officially recognised channels.
