The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party in the 2023 general elections, Adewale Adebayo, has warned that Nigeria is heading toward a one-party state, accusing the ruling APC of stifling opposition voices and shrinking democratic space.
Adebayo gave the warning on Tuesday during a visit to the Kaduna State SDP Secretariat, urging nationwide mobilisation to resist what he called anti-democratic manoeuvres.

The SDP flag-bearer alleged that some political actors had “conspired” to concentrate power in a single dominant party, weakening political competition and citizen choice.
“They forgot that God created this country,” he said, adding that hunger, unemployment, and insecurity cut across regions, religion and age groups.
Adebayo further accused the APC of seeking to “destroy all opposition” ahead of the 2027 election cycle, a development he said could destabilise Nigeria’s democratic structure if unchecked.
PDP facing consequences for past failures
The former SDP candidate also knocked the Peoples Democratic Party, saying the party was now confronting political consequences for what he termed failure to deliver justice during its 16-year hold on federal power.
He urged Nigerians to remain politically vigilant year-round, warning citizens not to trust politicians who only engage the public during election seasons.
Criticism of executive foreign-priority claims
Adebayo also criticised the Federal Government for what he alleged was faster responsiveness to foreign figures than Nigerian citizens.
“They listen to Trump more than the Nigerian people,” he said, alluding to previous public exchanges involving former US president Donald Trump.
Kaduna chapter urged to deepen grassroots drive
During the visit, Adebayo charged the Kaduna State chapter of the SDP to intensify grassroots mobilisation and secure a permanent party secretariat ahead of the 2027 elections.
The politician maintained that the Kaduna State SDP Secretariat must strengthen local structures if the party hopes to remain politically competitive as national alignments shift.
He described the SDP as “one of the few remaining platforms capable of reinvigorating political pluralism and accountability in Nigeria.”
