Cohabiting Is Better Than Marriage – Yvonne Jegede

Nollywood actress Yvonne Jegede has said that marriage is overrated. She recently had her say during an interview with Naija FM, and fans have been reacting.

According to her, she has seen several cases where long-term couples break up shortly after tying the knot, hence why she believes cohabiting might be a better option.

Yvonne added that while she is open to remarriage, she is not actively seeking it.

Her words, “I am open to remarriage if it comes, but I am not looking for it. I have learnt not to say ‘never’.

I think marriage is overrated. A lot of people who dated for 10 to 15 years, got married, and then broke up within 2 to 3 years. Sometimes, you wonder why such couples didn’t just remain unmarried. Because when they add the marriage tag, a lot of intolerance gets in the way.

I think it is better to find who you love and just cohabit with them.”

The origin of the term “Nollywood” remains unclear; Jonathan Haynes traced the earliest usage of the word to a 2002 article by Matt Steinglass in the New York Times, where it was used to describe Nigerian cinema.

Charles Igwe noted that Norimitsu Onishi also used the name in a September 2002 article he wrote for the New York Times. The term continues to be used in the media to refer to the Nigerian film industry, with its definition later assumed to be a portmanteau of the words “Nigeria” and “Hollywood”, the American major film hub.

Film-making in Nigeria is divided largely along regional, and marginally ethnic and religious lines. Thus, there are distinct film industries – each seeking to portray the concern of the particular section and ethnicity it represents. However, there is the English-language film industry which is a melting pot for filmmaking and filmmakers from most of the regional industries.
