The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has called on all aviation stakeholders to cooperate closely as passenger traffic surges across the country’s airports during the festive season. The appeal comes amid heightened travel activities associated with end-of-year celebrations, which traditionally place pressure on airport infrastructure, airlines and security agencies.
FAAN said the festive period is one of the busiest times for air travel in Nigeria, with thousands of passengers moving daily across major airports such as Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Kano and Enugu. The authority noted that effective collaboration among stakeholders is essential to ensure smooth operations, passenger safety and positive travel experiences.

According to FAAN, the increase in passenger numbers often comes with operational challenges, including congestion at terminals, delays in passenger processing and heightened security demands. The authority stressed that proactive cooperation among airlines, ground handlers, security agencies, immigration officials and airport service providers is critical to managing these challenges effectively.
FAAN management explained that several measures have been put in place to ease movement within airport terminals during the festive rush. These include strengthened passenger facilitation processes, improved crowd control arrangements and increased deployment of operational staff. However, the authority noted that these efforts can only yield optimal results with the active support of all stakeholders.
Airlines were urged to adhere strictly to published schedules and ensure timely dissemination of information to passengers in the event of delays or flight changes. FAAN said clear communication would help manage passenger expectations and reduce tension at terminals, particularly during peak travel hours.
The authority also called on ground handling companies to maintain high standards of service delivery, especially in baggage handling and aircraft turnaround times. According to FAAN, delays in these areas often have a ripple effect, disrupting flight schedules and causing congestion within airport facilities.
Security agencies operating at the airports were equally urged to enhance professionalism while maintaining vigilance. FAAN acknowledged the critical role of aviation security personnel in ensuring passenger safety, especially during periods of increased travel when risks may be heightened. It, however, appealed for a balance between strict security screening and courteous engagement with passengers.
Immigration and customs officials were also encouraged to streamline processes and work collaboratively to minimise bottlenecks, particularly for international travellers. FAAN noted that efficient processing at entry and exit points would significantly improve passenger flow and reduce overcrowding in terminal areas.
FAAN further appealed to passengers to cooperate with airport officials and comply with established procedures. It advised travellers to arrive at airports early, observe security guidelines and remain patient during screening and boarding processes. According to the authority, passenger cooperation plays a vital role in maintaining order and ensuring timely departures.
The authority also warned against acts capable of disrupting airport operations, including unruly behaviour, refusal to follow instructions or interference with security processes. FAAN said such actions could compromise safety and lead to sanctions under existing aviation regulations.
In preparation for the festive rush, FAAN said it has intensified routine maintenance of airport facilities, including power supply systems, airfield lighting and terminal amenities. The authority explained that these measures are aimed at ensuring uninterrupted operations and enhancing passenger comfort during the high-traffic period.
FAAN acknowledged that weather conditions during the festive season can also impact flight operations, particularly harmattan haze in some parts of the country. It urged airlines and passengers to remain understanding in cases where safety considerations necessitate flight delays or cancellations.
Industry analysts say the festive travel peak is a critical test for Nigeria’s aviation sector, given ongoing concerns about infrastructure capacity, airline operations and passenger service delivery. They note that effective coordination among stakeholders is key to avoiding disruptions and maintaining public confidence in air travel.
Observers also point out that lessons learned during peak periods can help inform long-term improvements in airport management and service delivery. By identifying pressure points and operational gaps, stakeholders can develop strategies to enhance efficiency beyond the festive season.
FAAN reiterated its commitment to ensuring safe, secure and efficient airport operations across the country. The authority said it remains in constant engagement with relevant agencies and service providers to address emerging issues promptly as passenger traffic continues to rise.
As festive travel reaches its peak, FAAN expressed optimism that sustained cooperation among stakeholders would lead to smoother operations and improved passenger experiences. It stressed that collective responsibility and professionalism are essential to meeting the demands of the season and maintaining the integrity of Nigeria’s aviation sector.
With millions of Nigerians expected to travel by air during the holidays, the authority said its priority remains the safety and comfort of passengers. FAAN urged all stakeholders to remain vigilant, collaborative and responsive, noting that successful management of the festive travel rush would reflect positively on the entire aviation industry.
