Former vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general elections, Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed, has formally declared his intention to contest the presidency in the 2027 general elections.
Baba-Ahmed made the declaration at a rally held at the Labour Party’s national secretariat in Abuja.

The announcement comes barely one week after the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, announced his departure from the Labour Party for the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Addressing party members and supporters at the rally, Baba-Ahmed said his decision to run for president was neither reactionary nor influenced by Obi’s political move, stressing that his ambition predates the 2023 general election.
“I have made myself available to contest for the office in 2027. I’m not following anybody’s trajectory or stepping into anybody’s shoes,” he said.
Baba-Ahmed further recalled that he had nursed a presidential ambition even before the emergence of Peter Obi as the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in 2023.
“Can I please remind you that before His Excellency Governor Peter Obi filed for the presidency, I aspired for the presidency before him? The records are there for you to see,” he added.
