The Imo State chapter of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has constituted a new interim executive to oversee its affairs ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Chigozie Ekeogu emerged as the Interim State Chairman, alongside other members of the executive.
The newly appointed leadership is tasked with driving membership registration, strengthening party structures and positioning the party for electoral success.

Addressing party members, the National Youth Leader of the SDP and immediate past Imo State Chairman, Ifeanyi Henry Eluwa, said the move was aimed at reinforcing the party’s presence across the 27 local government areas of the state.
“Today, we announce Gozie Ekeogu as the Interim Chairman of SDP, Imo State. His leadership will take us to congress and prepare us to participate effectively in electoral contests,” he said.
Eluwa added that the party would continue to operate in line with its core ideologies of social justice and good governance, noting that the principles were central to the campaign of M.K.O. Abiola in the annulled 1993 presidential election.
He described the SDP as a viable and democratic political platform without factional divisions, adding that it is strategically positioned to reshape the political landscape in the state and beyond.
According to him, more than 80 aspirants for elective positions in 2027 have already indicated interest in joining the party.
Eluwa also dismissed rumours of a merger between the SDP and the APP, stating that while the party may consider forming coalitions when necessary, it has no such arrangement with the APP.
He pledged his support for the interim leadership in strengthening the party’s structures and achieving its objectives.
Other members of the interim executive include Achonwa Amaobichukwu as Organising Secretary, Ngozi Amajuoyi as Women Leader, and Bright Nze as Labour and Civil Society Secretary, among others.
In his remarks, Ekeogu expressed appreciation for the confidence reposed in him and his team, assuring members of their commitment to strengthening the party at the state, local government and ward levels.
