Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has announced that three senatorial seats in the 10th Senate are now vacant following the deaths of their occupants.
Akpabio made the declaration during Tuesday’s plenary, stating that the vacancies were created by the demise of lawmakers representing the affected districts.
He noted that the action is in line with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

“Due to the tragedies that have befallen the 10th Senate, vacancies have been created for midterm elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to fill the seats left vacant by our colleagues,” he said.
The Senate President listed the affected constituencies as Enugu North Senatorial District in Enugu State, Nasarawa North Senatorial District in Nasarawa State, and Rivers South-East Senatorial District in Rivers State.
He added that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is constitutionally mandated to conduct bye-elections to fill the vacant seats within the stipulated timeframe, approximately 30 days from the date of the declaration.
