Nollywood filmmaker Kemi Adetiba has shared what inspired her idea for her Netflix crime series, “To Kill a Monkey.” She recently had her say via an Instagram post, and fans have been reacting.
Revealing that the idea came to her on the morning of her engagement, Adetiba stated that an interaction with her husband opened her eyes to the project, and the title was even inspired by something he said.

Kemi concluded by thanking Nigerians for accepting the movie, stressing that the last time she felt such support was when she released “King of Boys”.
Her words, “Someone reminded me of this yesterday, and I couldn’t wait to get on here to share.
Do you know, like-joke-like-joke we’re creeping up to the ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY of the release of TO KILL A MONKEY (still showing on NETFLIX)? I’m talking, this month on July 18th??
WHERE DID THE YEAR GO??
I’m grateful to God for choosing me and giving me the direction to birth such a complicated series. I haven’t spoken much about my TKAM process but a small detail I’ll share today is that the idea came to me the morning of my engagement.
@oscarhemanackah had me in Ghana under false pretenses & the morning of, he was rushing out – (I later found out his location for the secret proposal had fallen through & he needed to get another quick. Plus my family & friends were flying in (unknown to me) and he was managing them all.
But in that moment, just as he was about to walk out the door, I felt something.
It felt like someone had poured cold water over me & I was drenched to my toes. Then I had the sensation of my body drying up, starting from my toes to the top of my head. Then as if by reflex, my mouth opens & I blurt out, “I know what I’m meant to do next.
I then download the skeletal story of two men in a complicated relationship. My baby paused & standing there VALIDATED my idea for 35 minutes. In fact the title came from something he said & the hair on my arms stood straight. I said in that moment – that’s the title… TO KILL A MONKEY. Infact, part of Efemini’s opening monologue is a loose recollection of what he said to me, standing there by the door, rushing out to prepare to ask me to be his wife later on that night: “There are two types of people in this world…
I’m not only grateful to have been chosen to create TKAM, Im grateful for how you all EMBRACED it. I will never forget. It was like something took over the entire country. Last time I felt that was with KING OF BOYS. And I can’t wait to feel that again with my new project coming up.
THANK. YOU. ALL for making TKAM what is was and what it is… And I look forward to our TKAM FAMILY CELEBRATIONS come JULY 18th ”
