Atiku explains why he opposed Obasanjo’s third-term agenda

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has explained the reasons behind his opposition to former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s controversial third-term agenda, saying his decision was driven by his commitment to constitutional democracy and the rule of law.

Atiku said he rejected the proposed constitutional amendment because it was inconsistent with democratic principles and threatened Nigeria’s constitutional order.

According to him, attempts to extend the tenure of an elected president beyond the period stipulated in the Constitution would have undermined democratic governance and set a dangerous precedent for the country.

The former vice president recalled that resisting the third-term proposal came at a significant personal and political cost, but maintained that defending the Constitution was more important than preserving political alliances.

He stressed that democracy can only thrive when leaders respect constitutional provisions and allow the people to determine leadership through periodic elections.

Atiku also urged Nigerians to remain vigilant in defending democratic institutions and constitutional governance, noting that the country’s democratic gains must be protected from actions capable of weakening the electoral process.

He reiterated his commitment to democratic ideals, insisting that leadership must always be anchored on constitutionalism, accountability and the will of the people.
