Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has pledged to ensure that funds meant for Nigeria’s local government areas are paid directly into their respective council accounts if elected president in 2027.
Atiku made the promise while speaking on his plans for local government administration and financial autonomy ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
He said his administration would strengthen the autonomy of local governments and prevent state governments from interfering with funds allocated to the councils.
According to him, local governments should have direct access to their statutory allocations to enable them to effectively provide basic services and execute development projects.
Atiku said direct funding would also improve accountability and ensure that resources meant for grassroots development are not diverted.
He maintained that empowering local governments would bring governance closer to the people and accelerate development at the grassroots.
The former vice president further called for reforms that would strengthen democratic institutions and ensure that public resources are used for their intended purposes.
He said his administration, if given the mandate in 2027, would prioritise transparency, accountability and effective governance across all levels of government.
