Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has said he will remain actively involved in political activities in Rivers State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Wike stated that he would not sit back and allow former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, to win the election.
The former Rivers State governor spoke on Wednesday during his monthly media parley in Port Harcourt, where he also addressed speculation that he was planning to relocate to the state.
Wike dismissed the reports, explaining that his frequent visits to Rivers were aimed at maintaining contact with his people, monitoring political developments and ensuring that political activities were properly coordinated.
He said he could not remain in Abuja and depend solely on assurances from political associates that everything was going well in Rivers State.
According to him, the current political period was too important for him to remain passive, particularly with political parties already making preparations for the 2027 elections.
“It’s not about relocating, it’s about coming home to relate with the people and talk to them, and also do those things you know how to do very well, not to take chances,” Wike said.
He added that he needed to personally assess developments in the state rather than rely on reports from candidates and political associates.
Wike further stressed that he had no intention of relocating from Abuja, but would continue visiting Rivers State to engage with his political base and monitor developments ahead of the 2027 election.
“You want me to fold my hand for Atiku Abubakar to come and win the election?” he asked.
