Minister of Works, David Umahi, has said he played a role in weakening the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, while maintaining that the party’s former member and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, remains his friend.
Umahi made the remarks while reflecting on his political journey and his relationship with Wike, despite their movement away from the PDP.
The former Ebonyi State governor said his departure from the PDP and subsequent alignment with the All Progressives Congress, APC, contributed to changes within the opposition party.
He recalled that he and Wike were once prominent members of the PDP before leaving the party for the APC.
According to Umahi, political differences did not erase the personal relationship between him and Wike.
He described Wike as a friend and said their political affiliations should not be interpreted as a rejection of their longstanding personal ties.
Umahi also spoke about the broader political realignments taking place ahead of the 2027 general election, noting that politicians could disagree politically while maintaining cordial personal relationships.
The minister said his political decisions were guided by his convictions and assessment of the direction he believed was appropriate for him at different stages of his career.
He added that political movements and alliances would continue to evolve as parties and their members prepare for the 2027 elections.
