Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has granted absolute pardon to 130 inmates as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
The governor also commuted the death sentences of four inmates to life imprisonment.

Mutfwang announced the exercise of his prerogative of mercy on Thursday, October 1, 2026, in his goodwill message to Plateau residents and Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora to mark the Independence anniversary.
He said the decision was taken after due consultation with the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy and in accordance with the powers vested in him by the Nigerian Constitution.
The four inmates whose death sentences were commuted to life imprisonment are Zuhumnan Musa, Jeremiah Aese, Pam Lang and Thoma Danboyi.
The governor described the anniversary as an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the country’s journey since independence, honour the sacrifices of past leaders, acknowledge existing challenges and renew their commitment to building a stronger and more united nation.
He urged Nigerians to preserve the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country, stressing that nation-building was a collective responsibility.
Mutfwang also said Nigeria’s strength depended on citizens rising above their differences and working towards a country where everyone has a sense of belonging and an opportunity to fulfil their aspirations.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to building a Plateau State where citizens can pursue their aspirations in an atmosphere of peace, security, justice and inclusive development.
The governor commended Plateau residents for their resilience, patience and patriotism, urging them to remain committed to the Nigerian project despite the challenges confronting the country.
He also wished Nigerians at home and abroad a peaceful and meaningful 66th Independence Anniversary.
