The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has criticised the All Progressives Congress (APC) over the reported distribution of seven brand-new Toyota Prado sports utility vehicles (SUVs) to selected youth leaders for election mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The opposition party estimated that the vehicles could cost about ₦1.015 billion, describing the reported expenditure as insensitive to the economic hardship confronting Nigerians.

The controversy followed a social media post by the APC National Youth Leader, Dayo Israel, announcing the presentation of the vehicles to selected youth leaders to support their mobilisation activities ahead of the next general election.
In its reaction, the NDC put the estimated price of each 2026 Toyota Prado at ₦145 million, arguing that the purchase of seven vehicles would amount to more than ₦1 billion.
The party accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of asking Nigerians to endure the effects of its economic reforms while political activities appeared to attract substantial spending on luxury vehicles.
In a statement, the NDC said the reported distribution raised questions about the government’s priorities at a time when many citizens were struggling with rising living costs and other economic difficulties.
“While the rudderless, clueless, and ruinous administration of President Bola Tinubu has been asking Nigerians to endure the pains of its wicked and cruel reforms, this is how taxpayers’ money is being spent,” the party said.
The NDC called on Nigerians to reject the APC-led administration at the 2027 polls, insisting that the country needed a different approach to governance and public expenditure.
It also highlighted its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, saying he was committed to reducing the cost of governance and ensuring that public resources were directed towards improving the welfare of citizens.
The dispute over the SUVs has added to the growing political exchanges between the ruling APC and opposition parties as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.
