Vice President Kashim Shettima has criticised the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, claiming that the former Anambra State governor has little to offer Nigerians beyond quoting statistics.
Shettima made the remarks on Monday while speaking at an event in Abuja, where he defended the economic policies of President Bola Tinubu’s administration ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The Vice President argued that while Obi frequently cites statistics in discussing Nigeria’s economic challenges, he had yet to present what Shettima considered concrete solutions to the country’s problems.
“I respect Peter Obi for having the courage to say he’s not going to restore the petrol subsidy, but beyond spouting some statistics, Mr Peter Obi has absolutely nothing to offer,” Shettima said.
He maintained that the Tinubu administration was taking difficult but necessary decisions aimed at reviving the economy and addressing longstanding structural challenges.
Shettima’s comments came amid growing political exchanges between supporters of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and opposition parties as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Obi has consistently used economic data and international comparisons to criticise the Federal Government’s handling of poverty, inflation and other economic challenges. He has argued that Nigeria could learn from countries that have recorded improvements in living standards through targeted policies and effective management of public resources.
The former Anambra governor has also called for greater accountability in government spending and policies that directly improve the welfare of ordinary Nigerians.
Shettima’s latest remarks have added to the ongoing debate over the economic policies and governing approaches being advanced by the major political figures seeking to influence Nigeria’s political direction ahead of the next general election.
