
Southampton has just completed the signing of defender Virgil van Dijk from Celtic on a five-year contract, the Premier League club have confirmed.
The 24-year-old Netherlands international over two years with Scottish Premier League champions Celtic, making over 100 appearances and scoring 15 goals.
The fee involved in the transfer has not been disclosed but has been reported to be in the region of £11.5m.
Van Dijk told the club’s website: “This is a very ambitious club, who have been doing very well in the last couple of years. It’s a great place to be and it’s the right step for me.
“I know it’s an ambitious club – they have been through a lot throughout the years. They are trying to play football and that’s something that really attracted me.”
Van Dijk has represented the Netherlands at the under-19 and under-21 levels.
He becomes the Saints’ second signing on the transfer deadline day, following the arrival of Harry Lewis from Shrewsbury Town earlier on Tuesday.
