Kendrick Lamar and TDE founder Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith recently sat down with Billboard for a new cover story interview.
During the talk, which covered the duo’s creative and business partnership and the recording of Kendrick’s standout studio album good kid, m.A.A.d city, Kendrick also revealed the fact that he’d never been to a concert before the first night he took the stage himself.
“I didn’t even get to go to a show. Back then, we didn’t have the money for it,” he said. “When I went on tour with The Game [and Jay Rock, in 2006]—that was my first show.” Kendrick continued, “That shit cost money. Gas money. Me being onstage is me fulfilling two different things—performing and getting to enjoy it like the people enjoying it.”
He also revealed that good kid, m.A.A.d city went through several iterations before being finalized: “We did good kid about three, four times before the world got to it…. New songs, new everything. I wanted to tell that story, but I had to execute it. My whole thing is about execution. The songs can be great, the hooks can be great, but if it’s not executed well, then it’s not a great album.”
