The African Alliance Party (AAP) says it is set to challenge the registration of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in court.
The party is demanding the deregistration of the newly registered political platform, alleging that it was deceitfully and mischievously approved by the electoral umpire.

AAP disclosed that its National Executive Committee (NEC) has authorised legal action against INEC and warned that the Commission’s Chairman, Joash Amupitan, risks undermining the democratic process.
In a statement signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Abubakar Sadiq, the AAP alleged that the NDC was registered on February 5, 2026, despite not being among the associations that completed INEC’s pre-qualification and verification processes.
The party maintained that it participated in all required stages of the registration process and was among the associations earlier approved for registration in December 2025.
AAP described the alleged replacement of its registration with that of the NDC as an assault on the electoral process and an act of exclusion that must be resisted.
According to the statement, the party’s NEC met in Abuja on February 17, 2026, and resolved to challenge INEC’s decision in court while demanding the deregistration of the NDC.
The party argued that deregistering the NDC would be a step toward sanitising the democratic system and questioned the impartiality of the INEC leadership in the matter.
AAP further stated that political party registration should not be treated as a discretionary gesture but as a constitutional process that must be transparent, credible and inclusive.
The party urged INEC to register the African Alliance Party in line with what it described as due process, stressing that Nigerians and the international community are closely watching developments.
