The Abia State Government has pledged to contribute significantly to reversing the decline in Nigeria’s crude oil production
Governor Alex Otti made the commitment on Tuesday at his residence in Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area, while receiving a delegation from the Defence Headquarters Joint Monitoring Team, led by Maj. Gen. J.A.L. Jimoh, on a working visit.
Governor Otti expressed concern over the sharp decline in Nigeria’s crude oil production, revealing that it was one of the key topics during his recent discussions with the National Security Adviser.

Citing production figures for June, July, and August, the governor noted that Nigeria’s output averaged 1.4 million barrels per day, significantly below the country’s quota of 2.2 million barrels per day.
He recalled that 20 years ago, Nigeria’s crude oil production capacity stood at approximately 2.5 million barrels per day, lamenting that the decline has negatively impacted export revenues and foreign exchange earnings.
Governor Otti attributed the drop in production to oil theft and unrest in the Niger Delta, underscoring the need for decisive action to address these challenges.
In his remarks, Maj. Gen. Jimoh explained that the Joint Monitoring Team was recently established to oversee critical issues affecting the nation’s oil sector.
He commended Governor Otti for his unwavering support for the initiative, assuring him that every effort would be made to restore operational efficiency in the sector.
The delegation accompanying Maj. Gen. Jimoh included Rear Admiral D. Fadeyi, Rear Admiral S.D. Ibrahim, Air Vice Marshal Dari, Brig. Gen. A.A. Idris, Col. M.M. Silong, Lt. Col. M.J. Bent, Commissioner of Police Iyama Daniel, and Commandant Muhammed Waska.
