The Nafiu Bala-led faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has dismissed former Senate President David Mark’s claim to leadership of the party, insisting that he is not a legitimate member.
In a statement on Friday, Aminu Alhassan, Special Assistant on Public Affairs to Bala, described the inauguration of a new National Working Committee (NWC) headed by Mark as a “clear violation” of the ADC constitution.
In July, several opposition figures and ADC leaders adopted the party as the coalition platform for the 2027 general elections.

The coalition includes former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar; Mark; former PDP National Chairman, Uche Secondus; ex-Kaduna Governor, Nasir el-Rufai; 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi; former Interior Minister, Rauf Aregbesola; ex-Transport Minister, Rotimi Amaechi; and Bolaji Abdullahi, a former senatorial candidate.
On July 2, ADC founder and former National Chairman Ralph Nwosu announced the resignation of the NWC and endorsed Mark to lead an interim leadership.
The coalition members subsequently wrote to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) seeking recognition for the Mark-led NWC.
However, Alhassan maintained that only “bona fide members” of the ADC are eligible for leadership positions.
He emphasised that the party’s constitution contains no provision for non-members to assume leadership roles without fulfilling the necessary membership and democratic requirements.
“Mark and his team do not represent the ADC. Their actions are a blatant disregard for the democratic principles the party upholds,” Alhassan stated.
He further stressed that the Bala-led faction would resist any attempt to impose leaders on the party through unconstitutional means.
