The African Development Bank in conjunction with African Union Development Agency have released recommendations of a baseline study that looked into the development of a continental energy grid and market.

According to the African Development Bank, the study, was supported by the European Union, and was conducted to create an effective energy sector that helps to serve Africa in general.
The Chief Executive Officer of the African Union Development Agency, Dr Ibrahim, stated that the baseline study constitutes the first of two phases of the major goal.
The African Development Bank stated that the European Union agreed to support Phase 1 under its Technical Assistance Facility (EU TAF) for sustainable energy, under the African Union-European Union partnership to harmonize the African Single Electricity Market Regulatory Framework.
The African Development Bank noted that the baseline study should include, establishing a permanent unit to develop the masterplan, and the five regional power pools, and aligning the plan with existing infrastructure projects.
The African Development Bank, further stated that a total estimate of 640 million Africans doesn’t have access to energy, while African countries have 40% electricity rate which is tthe lowest in the world.
