Rights activist, Aisha Yesufu, has identified the unchecked defection of politicians from one party to another as one of the biggest problems confronting Nigerian politics.
In a post on X, Yesufu stressed the need for legal reforms that would guarantee freedom of association but also compel defecting politicians to relinquish any political offices or benefits secured under their former parties.
According to her, without such laws, the culture of politicians abandoning their platforms to join the ruling party at both state and federal levels will continue unchecked.
“One of the biggest problems we have in Nigerian politics is this defection from one party to another seamlessly,” she wrote.
“We must have codified laws that expressly state that your right of association is guaranteed and you can defect from one party to another, BUT whatever you won has to be left behind!
“Until that is done, we would continue to have this unhealthy situation where everyone wants to move to the ruling party, be it at the state or federal level,” Yesufu added.
