Azam have won the Tanzania Premier League for the first time, stealing the shine off big guns, Simba and Young Africans (Yanga).
The capital-based club wrapped up the title with a game to spare thanks to a 2-1 win over Mbeya City at the Sokoine Memorial Stadium in Mbeya.
The result, which stripped Mbeya City of its unbeaten home status, pummeled Azam to 59 points, four more than closest contenders, Yanga.
It was the first time in 14-years that the league title has been won by a club other than the two powerhouses of Tanzania football, Simba and Yanga.
Previously, Azam has missed the title by a whisker twice, finishing second behind Simba in the 2011/2012 season, and runners-up to Yanga last season.
Azam, seeking to finish the season on an unbeaten note, a feat achieved by Simbab during the 2009/2010 season will represent Tanzania in next year’s CAF Champions League.
Cameroon-born head coach of Azam, Joseph Omog told Cafonline.com that he is happy for having helped the club to a historical league title win.
“This is a special day for Azam. It has been a long fight and am glad we have achieved this mission. I must hail players who have been resilient throughout the season, working hard to make sure that we win this title,” added Omog.
