Niger State Governor, Umaru Bago, has announced himself as the self-appointed Director General of President Bola Tinubu’s re-election campaign for 2027, declaring Niger State as the campaign headquarters.
Speaking in Minna on Tuesday, Bago said his decision was aimed at ensuring the continuity of the current administration’s leadership, stressing the importance of honouring Nigeria’s unwritten power rotation arrangement between the North and South.
“I’m now the self-imposed Director General of the Tinubu campaign for 2027, and Niger State is the campaign headquarters for Asiwaju 2027,” the governor stated.

He criticised some members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) who are pushing for a northern presidential candidate ahead of the next general election, warning that such moves could undermine national stability.
“There is an unwritten understanding in Nigeria for power to rotate between the North and the South. This has brought peace to this country,” Bago said.
The governor emphasised that Tinubu was still early in his tenure and deserved the opportunity to complete his time in office.
“We completed the tenure of former President Muhammadu Buhari, and Asiwaju is just in his second year,” he added.
