A governorship aspirant of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Benue State, Engr. Andrew Aba, has cautioned politicians against mistaking diplomatic courtesy for genuine respect, insisting that citizens are well aware of the character and performance of those in public office.
Aba made the remarks while reacting to a recent social media post attributed to the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, in which she reportedly urged Nigerians to refrain from insulting their leaders, noting that such leaders are often celebrated during foreign engagements.

According to Aba, the admiration shown to Nigerian officials abroad should not be interpreted as endorsement of their leadership at home.
“There is a clear difference between courtesy and respect,” he said, explaining that diplomatic courtesies are often guided by protocol and political interests rather than a sincere assessment of governance performance.
He added that foreign leaders understand the realities of Nigeria’s governance and do not lose that awareness despite ceremonial praise or polite gestures during official events.
Aba maintained that Nigerians remain conscious of the actions of their leaders, particularly those he accused of prioritising personal enrichment over public welfare.
“Instead of solving the problems of the people, many leaders focus on self-aggrandisement, amassing wealth and investing it abroad, while the country’s future and the lives of generations yet unborn are damaged,” he stated.
He warned that the consequences of poor leadership decisions could have long-term implications, stressing that the actions of a single office holder could affect the nation for decades.
Looking ahead to future elections, the ADC aspirant urged Nigerians to make deliberate choices when selecting leaders.
“This is the time for the people to carefully evaluate those they intend to elect, leaders they can truly be proud of, both at home and abroad,” he said.
Aba called for the election of leaders who demonstrate integrity, promote peace, respect citizens and create conditions that support sustainable livelihoods and national development.
“Let us choose leaders who will serve with integrity and help build a Nigeria we can all be proud of,” he added.
