Costa Rica were denied a story-book conclusion to their FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup on home soil with Zambia securing a 2-1 comeback victory over the hosts.
The match was played in front of a loud and buoyant crowd at Tibas, the former national team stadium, but Las Ticas were unable to earn a share of the spoils despite their heroic efforts.
While Costa Rica unluckily ended the tournament without any points the result proved a breakthrough for Zambia who collected their maiden points in a FIFA women’s competition.
The contest was entertaining and open affair throughout. And the home faithful’s patience was rewarded after just three minutes as classy playmaker Gloriana Villalobos released Sofia Varela who finished coolly as Costa Rica scored their much-anticipated first goal of the tournament.
However, the lead proved short-lived with Grace Chanda equalising for Zambia by bundling the ball home from a cross.
Zambia took control for the remainder of the first half, creating several golden chances, most notably Grace Chanda hitting the post, with Memory Phiri incredibly missing the rebound.
The Africans were rewarded for their period of dominance with the most unlikely of goals midway through the second period. Defender Maria Araya made a regulation backpass but goalkeeper Yolian Salas took an airswing and the ball trickled over the line.
The big-hearted Las Ticas forced the pace throughout the latter stages but found no reward.
