Stakeholders and key sponsors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Cross River State have reiterated their demand for the immediate removal of the party chairman, Alphonsus Eba, and his executive committee (exco).
Despite increasing calls for his ouster, the exco recently met and reaffirmed Eba as their ‘indisputable chairman.’
Former presidential aide Chief Okoi Obono-Obla also opposed Eba’s removal, insisting that the party’s constitution must be followed in any removal process.

In an interview, Chief Higgins Peters, a former benefactor of Eba and a leading voice calling for his removal, criticized the Eba-led exco for its poor performance in the last year’s general elections and recent rerun elections, where the party suffered significant defeats.
Responding to the criticisms, Eba boasted that not even one billion of Higgins Peters’ influence could remove him from office.
Higgins Peters clarified that the call for Eba’s resignation was not personal but a collective decision by those who want a change in the party’s leadership due to perceived failures.
He emphasized that their demand is for the entire exco, including Eba, to step down.
He expressed surprise at Eba’s comments, stating, “I only sympathize with his limited knowledge and ignorance of me after being around me for 18 years.”
Higgins Peters highlighted various electoral failures under Eba’s leadership, including the loss of a senatorial district election by the sitting governor, Ben Ayade, and the absence of a state House of Assembly candidate from Eba’s local government area.
He argued that the removal of party chairmen at state and national levels has occurred in line with the exigencies of the times, emphasizing the need for change in leadership for the party’s interest and welfare.
The insistence on Eba’s removal underscores the deep-rooted discontent within the APC in Cross River State, as stakeholders push for a change in leadership to address the party’s challenges.
