Rwanda will host the 2014 regional Cecafa Kagame Club championship which will run from 9 to the 23rd August. The championship matches will all be staged in the capital Kigali, Cecafa Secretary General Nicholas Musonye has said.
The Amahoro and Nyamirambo will host the games with Rubavu stadium, an alternative venue.
In announcing the decision, Musonye hailed the cooperation of the Rwanda Football Federation, Ferwafa and the Ministry of Sports and Culture who committed to organizing “a good competition”.
“You will recall that the last time the Kagame Cup was played in Rwanda was in 2010 and the competition was a huge success. We want to surpass that by organizing a very good competition this year. The “Kagame Cup is now an established brand in Africa and we must stage a championship that meets standards in the highest esteem and highest possible way to ensure that the brand remains what it has been,” Musonye said adding that clubs from 12 countries had confirmed their participation.
Four clubs from Angola, the DRC and Congo Brazzaville are on standby for the championship sponsored by President Kagame who has committed US$60,000 annually since 2002 for the tournament.
“Rwanda is ready, Cecafa is ready and all our teams are ready to come for the competition. We are going to have the biggest number of entrants in this competition,” Musonye said.
“I want to thank President Paul Kagame for being an able patron who keeps his word. We have already received his commitment to this competition. That’s leadership we are talking about; leadership that honours its commitment. That’s why we are inspired to go flat out to organize this competition in the best possible way ever,” he added.
SuperSport International will broadcast all Kagame Cup matches live.
Burundi’s Vital ‘O are the defending champions. They defeated APR 2-0 in the final last year in Darfur.
