Former acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Umar Damagum, has formally handed over leadership to the newly constituted National Working Committee, NWC, led by Tanimu Turaki.
The transition, which took place at the Bauchi State Governor’s Lodge in Abuja, followed the expiration of the Damagum-led NWC’s tenure on December 8, 2025, after months of leadership tussle with the faction loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike.

Speaking during the handover, Damagum said the new NWC has the responsibility to reunite and rebuild the party.
“The beauty of it is that we were able to surmount all the obstacles that we faced and we will continue to surmount them,” he stated.
He maintained that the PDP still has a strong future despite its internal challenges, insisting it remains “the party to beat.”
“That’s why they lose sleep about PDP. They keep putting different hurdles in our way, but God will see us through. We are positive. God is a just God; He does not support injustice,” Damagum added.
He also warned that individuals responsible for the party’s crisis may enjoy temporary relief but would eventually face the consequences of their actions.
In his remarks, Turaki commended the outgoing NWC for its efforts and pledged to continue working towards the progress and stability of the party.
