A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Segun Sowunmi, has expressed strong confidence in the resilience of the party amid recent defections to the All Progressives Congress (APC), stating that the PDP is built to withstand such political shifts.
Speaking on the wave of defections, Sowunmi dismissed concerns that the movement of some members to the APC spells doom for the PDP, questioning the rationale behind the panic.
“Why would PDP not survive?” he asked rhetorically, during a media chat. “Every political party has only a few coveted positions.

The presidency is just one ticket. All those aspiring to be president cannot do so under APC alone. The same applies to governorship tickets in the 36 states.”
He added that defections are a two-way phenomenon, as some politicians are also moving into the PDP and other parties, not just out of them.
“So I think those who are decamping to the APC are doing so, and those decamping to the PDP and other parties are also moving. It’s a political realignment, not a collapse,” he said.
Sowunmi also urged against premature political forecasting, stating that the next general election is still far off.
“It’s too early in the day for anybody to say who is going or staying. A lot can happen before then,” he said.
He reaffirmed the PDP’s strength, stressing that the party’s grassroots structures remain solid at both state and local government levels.
“The PDP has strong foundations. Our structures are functional across the country, and that’s what really counts in elections,” Sowunmi concluded.
