Former Director-General of the defunct Peter Obi Presidential Campaign Organization, Dr. Doyin Okupe, has asserted that his trial and conviction in 2022 were politically motivated.
Okupe, who was convicted on 19 December 2023 by the Federal High Court in Abuja for money laundering to the tune of N700 million, maintained that he was never convicted of corruption, contrary to insinuations in some quarters. He alleged that elements within the presidency orchestrated his prosecution.
Speaking on Arise TV, Okupe clarified, “I was never convicted of corruption.

Ibwas discharged from all 34 charges of corruption. I was discharged completely.” He further claimed that the All Progressives Congress (APC) government used the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to target him.
He argued, “For you to convict someone of money laundering, there must be concealment, but I have never concealed anything.
Wondly, there must be a direct benefit to the person who collected the money, but there was no direct benefit to me, and I was able to prove that in court.”
Okupe, a former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, described his arrest and prosecution as malicious and persecution. He concluded, “Some people in the presidency wanted to punish me.”
