Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Edo State Secretary Mr. Hilary Otsu has warned the party against running unpopular candidates for governor in the 2024 election.
On Wednesday, Otsu issued the warning in a statement to Benininian media outlets.
He claimed that voters in the state have a high level of political knowledge and that the PDP, in order to win, must run a candidate with widespread support.

He noted that the party suffered electoral defeats in some districts since the majority of the candidates they filed in the 2023 general election were unknown.
The leader of the party warned against forcing candidates on the voters, claiming that the public was already paying attention to the selection process.
Most of the candidates that ran in the 2023 general election were unpopular, and the majority of voters in each of their districts knew that they had been the product of unlawful means.
Therefore, many voters who were aware of the events leading up to their emergence actively to vote against them.
In order to combat the illegitimate candidates, the vast majority of PDP backers backed opposition party candidates.
That’s why the All Progressives Congress (APC) won historic gains in many areas, and the Labour Party (LP) won in others where APC support was low.
To paraphrase, “PDP has never lost Edo Central and South Senatorial seats before,” but the LP candidate who switched from PDP to LP two months before the election won the seat in Edo South.
