The Edo State Government has clarified remarks made by Governor Monday Okpebholo concerning the proposed visit of Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, to the state, stating that the comment was not intended as an attack.
Governor Okpebholo had come under public criticism after reportedly warning that Obi should not enter Edo State without informing him, a statement made while receiving a group of political defectors on Friday.
The comment sparked backlash on social media and among civil society groups, with many Nigerians describing the governor’s statement as unconstitutional and lacking respect for democratic norms.

However, in a statement released on Saturday by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, the government explained that Okpebholo’s remarks were rooted in official protocol, not personal animosity or political bias.
“Where misunderstandings arise, it is the responsibility of leaders to clarify, not to condemn. And that is what this moment calls for: clarity,” the statement said.
Itua emphasised that Governor Okpebholo holds Peter Obi and all Nigerians in high regard, and that the governor’s comments should not be misconstrued.
“The governor’s comment was not an attack. It was a statement borne out of official protocol, not personal bias,” he added.
The statement further appealed for calm and mutual respect, urging Nigerians not to allow the incident to cause unnecessary division.
“Let this moment not divide us but deepen our resolve for understanding. Let it remind us that even in disagreement, we must preserve our common humanity,” the statement concluded.
Peter Obi has yet to respond publicly to the incident.
However, political observers note that the episode underscores growing political sensitivity as various parties position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
