The Enugu State Government has announced that the concession process for Akanu Ibiam International Airport is over 70% complete, with full completion expected by the second quarter of 2025.
Dr. Obi Ozor, the State Commissioner for Transportation, stated that the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Aviation, is collaborating with private sector investors to finalize the concession. Upon completion, the new operators will undertake significant upgrades, including the completion of the international terminal, cargo terminal, maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facilities, construction of aircraft hangars, and extension of the existing runway.
In addition to the airport concession, the Enugu State Government is finalizing plans to launch a state-backed airline, Enugu Air, expected to begin operations in May 2025. Developed in collaboration with private aviation company Xejet, the airline will commence service with three Embraer aircraft, connecting Enugu with major Nigerian cities.

However, the concession process has faced criticism. The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide condemned the sudden closure of the airport for emergency repairs, citing inadequate notice and potential targeting of the Igbo community during a festive period. They also expressed concerns over the lack of transparency regarding the concession’s duration.
The Federal Government has clarified that while proposals for the concession of five major airports, including Enugu, are under review, no fixed duration has been approved. The initiative aims to ensure these facilities meet international standards amid financial challenges.
As the concession process progresses, stakeholders emphasize the need for transparency and equitable treatment to ensure the airport’s development benefits the region and aligns with national interests.
