The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has issued a warning to consumers about the increasing presence of substandard sugar in Nigerian markets. The Commission urged the public to exercise caution when purchasing sugar, as some products may be improperly labeled or fail to meet the required quality standards.
According to the FCCPC, several batches of sugar being sold in local markets have been found to contain impurities or have been processed under unsafe conditions. These substandard products pose potential health risks to consumers, particularly as sugar is a staple ingredient in many households. The Commission is advising buyers to carefully inspect sugar packages for authenticity, check expiry dates, and buy only from certified and trusted vendors.
In a statement, the FCCPC emphasized its commitment to protecting consumers from unsafe products and promised to ramp up surveillance activities across markets to ensure that only sugar meeting established safety standards is allowed to enter circulation. The Commission also noted that it would work with relevant agencies to remove substandard sugar from shelves and penalize distributors and manufacturers involved in the sale of such products.

“Substandard products, including sugar, are a serious concern for the safety and well-being of consumers. We encourage Nigerians to be vigilant and report any suspected cases of substandard sugar in the market,” said the Chairman of FCCPC. “We will continue to collaborate with other regulatory bodies to remove such products from circulation and ensure that consumers are protected from any potential harm.”
The rise in substandard sugar products has been linked to a combination of factors, including poor regulatory enforcement, the influx of cheap imports, and the lack of adequate monitoring of the sugar production process. The FCCPC is urging manufacturers, importers, and retailers to adhere strictly to the standards set by regulatory authorities to prevent the sale of harmful products.
Substandard sugar can lead to various health issues, particularly when consumed over time. Impurities in the sugar may include harmful chemicals, non-food substances, or foreign materials that could cause foodborne illnesses or adverse health effects. Therefore, it is crucial that consumers remain cautious when purchasing sugar and other food products, especially in informal markets.
To assist in the identification of genuine sugar products, the FCCPC recommended that consumers look for official certification marks, check for packaging integrity, and avoid buying bulk sugar that lacks clear labeling. The Commission also stressed the importance of purchasing from reputable retailers, whether online or in physical stores, to minimize the risk of acquiring substandard items.
The FCCPC’s warning comes as part of its broader efforts to safeguard consumer rights and ensure that only safe, quality products are available in the Nigerian marketplace. In addition to its efforts in monitoring sugar, the Commission has vowed to increase inspections and investigations across various sectors to curb the proliferation of substandard goods in the country.
Consumers are encouraged to report any suspected cases of substandard sugar to the FCCPC or other relevant authorities to help curb the problem and ensure that proper action is taken against offenders. With the Commission’s continued vigilance, it is hoped that Nigeria can reduce the prevalence of unsafe products in the market, ensuring a healthier and more secure environment for consumers.
