On Friday, Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri distributed 60,000 bags of rice, each weighing 25 kilograms.
The state administration plans to distribute the rice as part of a package of relief measures meant to ease the pain caused by the elimination of gasoline subsidies.
Fintiri said during a ceremony in Yola, the state capital, that the food item, which had been scheduled for sale at a 50 percent subsidised rate, would now be absolutely free, with the expense being borne by the state and municipal governments.

The governor has announced that 60,000 bags of rice will be given away free of charge to low-income homes regardless of political affiliation.
He also said that the distribution model should not favor the elite or the state palliative committee’s members.
He remembered that his administration has begun giving out N10,000 in special allowances to civil servants and retirees every month, that it has delivered approximately 100 trucks of high-quality fertilizer to workers and farmers, and that it has purchased 10 plush buses to help with transportation issues.
The governor pleaded with the people to have patience with the state and federal administrations due to the high cost of food commodities, which he blamed on the conflict between Russia and Ukraine and climate change.
He explained that the current economic difficulties are not unique to Nigeria and are not just the result of the loss of fuel subsidies but also the war between Russia and Ukraine and climate change.
