Gamtel have won the 2014/15 Gambia Premier League on the final day of the season following a 1-0 win against the Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) last Sunday (31 May 2015) at the Brikama Box Bar mini stadium.
The Telecom outfit finished the season on 44 points from 22 matches, enough to guarantee them the title, with two points separating them and second place, Real de Banjul who fired blank at home to Serrekunda United.
Striker Yaya Ndong scored the only goal of the match from the penalty spot after a GAF player handled in the vital area on 47 minutes, for his tenth goal of the season and finishing as joint top scorer.
This is the first league title for Gamtel, a side formed in 1997. They will also represent Gambia in next year’s CAF Champions League.
The league crown also came with a financial package of D300,000 (about 6900 US Dollar) for Gamtel.
They are on course for a domestic double and will face Wallidan in the FA Cup final on Saturday, 6 June 2015 at the Brikama Box Bar mini stadium.
Meanwhile, Bakau United and Interior, who finished in the bottom two of the 12-club league, have been relegated from the top flight.
Former champions Steve Biko and Samger have gained promotion to the top flight after finishing 1st and 2nd respectively in the second-tier league.
