The immediate focus of the Federal Government in the power sector is centered on prioritizing metering, electricity distribution, and transmission to enhance nationwide power supply, as stated by the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu. This information was conveyed during the 3rd Roundtable on Enforcement of Technical Standards, Regulations, and Mandate of the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency, according to a press release from the power ministry, now reported by InfoStride News.
Adelabu underscored the forthcoming power sector strategy roadmap, advocating for a bottom-up approach that prioritizes impact over the preceding top-down strategies. In his words, “We will focus on customers, down to distribution and transmission infrastructures in the short term, ensuring a significant portion of currently generated power reaches consumers.”
Additionally, the minister highlighted the attention that would be directed toward the generation segment of the sector, with a specific emphasis on distributed power (embedded) from renewable energy sources. Simultaneously, efforts will be made to advance baseload power through thermal and hydro plants in the medium to long term.

Discussing regional energy potentials, Adelabu identified solar energy in the North, small hydropower plants in the middle belt and South-West, hybridized with solar for maximum output. Coastal cities were designated for wind energy utilization, and the specifics of these strategies will be unveiled after an upcoming retreat involving stakeholders in the electricity value chain.
Addressing the need for adaptation, the minister urged the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA) to align with the decentralization of the sector, with state governments participating under the new Electricity Act of 2023. He assured NEMSA of the Federal Government’s support, recognizing the increased responsibilities at both federal and state levels.
Underlining the devolution of powers to states through the Electricity Act 2023, Adelabu emphasized NEMSA’s role as the lead enforcer of technical and regulatory standards. He encouraged collective efforts towards achieving the government’s mandate for regular and sustainable power supply.
Tukur Aliyu, the Chief Executive Officer of NEMSA, outlined the agency’s responsibilities under the Electricity Act 2023, encompassing the endorsement of technical standards and regulations, inspection, testing, and certification of electricity installations and instruments.
Concluding his remarks, the minister pledged collaboration with the National Council on Power to develop the integrated National Electricity Policy and Strategic Implementation Plan for submission to the Federal Executive Council. This collaborative approach aims to ensure a comprehensive and coordinated effort in achieving the objectives outlined in the power sector strategy roadmap.
